CAÑADA COLLEGE CELEBRATES LATINX HERITAGE MONTH

September 21-October 14 marks Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) and Cañada College is celebrating by creating a space of inclusion that transcends diversity and explores our intersectional identities. The LHM Planning Team has created a month filled with workshops and events for our students, campus community and the broader Redwood City community to amplify Latinx voices and identities, as well as creating space to come together. You can see the list of events on our LHM website. We look forward to collaborating and celebrating Latinx Heritage Month!

 

THE GROVE CAFÉ EXTENDED HOURS TRIAL

On Monday, September 26, The Grove Cafe began extending hours until 5 p.m. on a trial basis to measure need and sustainability. The new hours will be Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.- 5 p.m.

 

APPLY FOR THE VENDING COMMISSION GRANT - DEADLINE OCT. 7!

Apply for the Vending Commission grant to receive up to $2,500 for a Cañada program or event. Applications are due before Friday, October 7, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. Apply here. The Center for Student Life and Leadership Development Vending Commission Application is a once-a-year opportunity to garner money from the on-campus vending machines and provide funding for events, activities, and programs that are student focused. In order to qualify for funding through the Vending Commission, a program, item, or activity must benefit or target a maximum number of Cañada College students.

 

CAMPUS SHUTTLE

Cañada College Athletic Center is having a special promotion for students now through September 30. SUSPENSION OF MANDATORY COVID-19 WEEKLY TESTING FOR UNVACCINATED INDIVIDUALS

Due to the most recent changes in State and Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) workplace regulations, and the District’s desire to be consistent with the application of COVID policies for both students and employees, weekly mandatory COVID-19 testing will cease for unvaccinated students, and employees beginning Monday, September 19, 2022.

PARKING UPDATE

Permits are being reinstated for staff parking lots, and cars without a tag will be ticketed. Students can park in any designated student parking lot for free and without a permit. Students will be ticketed for parking in staff parking lots, designated handicap parking spaces without a tag, and designated red zones.

NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY

In this issue of the Cañada Library Newsletter read about library events, new high-speed book scanner, fall hours, Banned Books Week, and other library resources and services. You can view the newsletter here. Highlights include the in-person library event, “What Students Should Know Before Enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces” on Weds. Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. There has been an unprecedented number of attempts to ban books (especially books by and about LGBTQIA+ persons and POC) in libraries all over the country; learn more about Banned Books Week and read or listen to the top banned books of 2021 available through the Cañada Library.

 

PEER TUTORING SERVICES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS

Students can sign up for drop in tutoring and reservation appointments by visiting: https://canadacollege.edu/learningcenter/tutoring.php.Students can schedule 30-minute tutoring sessions, either, virtually via Zoom or face-to-face in the Learning Center. Drop In tutoring (immediate, first come, first served tutoring service with no appointment needed) will only be available in the Learning Center as a face-to-face service. Virtual tutoring service, via Zoom, is available by appointment only.

Due to the lack of demand for COVID-19 testing, COVID Clinic will cease testing operations at all three campuses as of Thursday, September 1, 2022. Individuals can still access COVID Clinic testing services within the San Mateo County community at the locations listed below: 

Cañada College – Testing available in Palo Alto, Mondays - Sundays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 

College of San Mateo – Testing available in San Mateo, Mondays - Fridays, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. 

Skyline College – Testing available in South San Francisco, Mondays - Saturdays, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. 

*Employees and students who have received an approved medical or sincerely held religious belief exemption will continue to receive testing services through the COVID-19 specialist at each campus.

FREE FOOD PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS

The SparkPoint team is excited to introduce the Student Aid Meals Card (SAM Card), a new $150 per month food card that you can use to purchase food at The Grove (Cañada College Cafeteria). The SAM Card is intended to ensure that students who are experiencing food insecurities have adequate access to food or money to purchase food. It can also be used at College of San Mateo and Skyline cafeterias (only used on campus). Students must remain enrolled in courses (at either Cañada College, College of San Mateo or Skyline College) to be eligible. Students can apply here! They only need to apply once and do not need to reapply each month. The first award will be around the second week of September. This award will be a double award (August + September).

 

CAÑADA FOOD PANTRY HAS REOPENED

Students can shop on campus for FREE and pick nutritious groceries at the Food Pantry! Located in Building 5, Room 202, the Food Pantry includes: fresh fruit, vegetables, milk, eggs, grains, meat, dry goods and snacks. The Food Pantry is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12- 4 p m. and serves students, staff, faculty and community members. No appointment is needed and people are encouraged to bring reusable bags

In addition to the Cañada Food Pantry, students can also visit one of our Drive-Thru Food Distributions - Drive up and pick up FREE groceries:

  • Skyline College, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., every Wednesday
  • College of San Mateo, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., every Friday
