Speaker Series: Computational Approaches for Probing the Gut Microbiome
5-6 p.m.
Building 6, Room 101/102
Speaker, Gabe Reder, is a Bay Area native researching
computational method for studying gut bacteria. After completing his
undergraduate studies in computer science at Princeton University, Gabe stayed
on the East Coast for a Master’s Degree in applied mathematics at Columbia
University. It was during this time that he realized the massive changes
happening in biomedicine today and shifted towards studying biology. At
Stanford Bioengineering, Gabe works in Michael Fischbach’s laboratory focusing
on the gut microbiome. The trillions of native bacterial residents of the human
gut churn out a cocktail of molecules that circulate through the bloodstream
and have massive physiological effects. Gabe is applying data science
techniques borrowed from Natural Language Processing to better understand what
this metabolic fingerprint looks like.
