Astronomy to get telescope sheds
In
an effort to simplify telescope setup and to make observation nights more
accessible and frequent the Astronomy Department has been working with
architects to build a new enclosure with a concrete base, telescope mounts and
protective sheds. The enclosure may be ready to use by the fall semester of
2019, about the same time that Astronomy classes are also moving to the new
Science Building 23.

Building 6,
Room 101/102
Please join us on March 29th for a convening of our key
stakeholders in the areas of student support that will be most impacted by AB

what we’re currently doing to support our incoming students, and what steps we
need to take between now and end of summer to prepare for this new landscape.
Key Outcomes:
- Gain a shared understanding of our current programs and services along with their strengths and growth opportunities
- Get updated on multiple measures placement for math and English courses
- Surface our most pressing needs; how to scale up support, identify potential gaps in support, and define our messaging to students
- Create a framework for what an interlinked, holistic student support approach will look like on our campus for fall 2019 and beyond
Please encourage anyone with an interest in
placement/assessment, tutoring, supplemental instruction, mentoring, retention
and related areas to attend this event.

Cañada Star Party - March 8, 2019
On Friday night, March 8th Cañada Astronomy hosted its Spring Star Party. After a week of gloomy weather the skies cleared just in time to entertain over thirty sky enthusiasts. Facilities and Public Safety helped put on the event by closing off Lot 10 for the event. Guests had an opportunity to look at the Great Orion Nebula, the Seven Sisters, and even a galaxy. Professor Elteto was eagerly answering questions about the birth and death of stars, as well as entertain the group with tales of the constellation Orion. One enthusiastic student brought her young children as well to look through the telescopes.
The students of the Astronomy Club hosted the event in Building 21 with some food, a gravity well demonstration, as well as a lecture on Black Holes.
Cañada Astronomy hosts star parties open to the public each semester. Our fall semester Star Party is likely to be in October.

New California Community Colleges Survey Highlights Food and Housing Insecurity Among Students
The California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and
The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice released a new report highlighting
food and housing insecurity among California community college students.
The report, California Community Colleges #RealCollege Survey,
evaluated access to affordable food and housing at 57 California community
colleges in the fall of 2016 and 2018. Of the nearly 40,000 California
community college students surveyed, half experienced food insecurity 30 days
prior to the survey, 60% were housing insecure in the previous year, and 19%
were homeless in the previous year.
Cañada College participated in the survey and received the
following topline numbers:
|
Food Insecurity
|
Housing Insecurity
|
Homelessness
|
Percentage
|
42.8
|
62.3
|
20.4
|
In response to these figures and the new report, Dr.
Jamillah Moore, President, Cañada College said, “We identified food and housing insecurity as a growing
threat to our student population years ago and immediately began taking action.
Cañada College is proud of what we’ve done to support our students through
initiatives including subsidized lunches, an on-site food pantry, and an annual
Awareness Summit designed to highlight these issues, connect community
partners, and collaborate towards new solutions. The release of this report
only adds urgency to our resolve—locally, regionally, and statewide—in finding
new ways to help our students meet these basic physiological needs so they can
thrive academically.”

The California Community Colleges
is the largest system of higher education in the nation, composed of 73
districts and 115 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year. California
community colleges provide career education and workforce training; guaranteed
transfer to four-year universities; degree and certificate pathways; and basic
skills education in English and math.
The Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice is a
Philadelphia-based nonprofit research center founded in 2013 that began as the
Wisconsin HOPE Lab. Its studies have drawn a sharper public focus on how the
rising costs of basic needs such as food and housing are making it more
difficult for college students to concentrate on school.
