“We are so excited for our students,” said Dr. Jamillah Moore, President of Cañada College. “It is not every day you get the opportunity to engage with a scholar like Dr. Cornel West. He has put the importance of racial justice and truth on the equity map for higher education.”
Dr. Cornel West is Professor of the Practice of Public Philosophy at Harvard University and Professor Emeritus at Princeton University. Cornel West graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard in three years and obtained his M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy at Princeton. He has authored 20 books and edited 13 and is best known for his classics, Race Matters, Democracy Matters and for his memoire, Brother West: Living and Loving Out Loud, and his most recent book, Black Prophetic Fire, which offers an unflinching look at nineteenth and twentieth-century African American leaders and their visionary legacies.
Dr. West is the co-host along with Dr. Tricia Rose of The Tight Rope which is a weekly podcast where they take time to welcome listeners and guests as thought collaborators with revered hosts and public intellectuals. Dr. West is a frequent guest on the Bill Maher Show, CNN, C-Span and Democracy Now. He has a passion to communicate to a vast variety of publics in order to keep alive the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. – a legacy of telling the truth and bearing witness to love and justice.
Rick Najera, an award-winning screenwriter, director
and Broadway playwright in Hollywood, and host of Najera in America podcast, created
Latino Thought Makers as a way to inspire younger generations through
meaningful and diverse conversations. Latino Thought Makers was created to
serve as a bridge for cultural tolerance and understanding while educating and
inspiring. Latino Thought Makers has featured guests such as Edward James
Olmos, Dolores Huerta, Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin and countless others.
“At a time when our country is in the
middle of racial strife and a global pandemic, we need a literary scholar like
Dr. Cornel West to lead the conversation on healing and social justice,” said
Dr. Moore.
