Indigenous Peoples Day

Dear Cañada Community,

On Monday, October 14, 2024, we at Cañada College recognize Indigenous Peoples Day. Indigenous Peoples Day provides an opportunity for our campus community to celebrate the lives, cultures, and traditions of Indigenous peoples and sovereignty. This is also a time for us to acknowledge how we have benefited from the use and occupation of the traditional unceded land of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples.

On this day, we encourage you to review our college’s Land and Labor Acknowledgement and think of ways we can further our education about these realities, as well as dialogue and find ways to act beyond the acknowledgement and challenge Indigenous erasure —as individuals and as a collective in this college.

The United Nations reminds us that there are over 476 million Indigenous peoples  living in 90 countries across the world. We encourage you to take a moment and reflect on how, in the United States, we have not yet ratified the United Nations’ Declaration for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and only began to federally recognize Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021.

How will you reflect today, and beyond today? Within our Cañada College community, we have had the privilege to take students, faculty, and staff to the Indigenous People’s Sunrise Gathering for numerous years, be in community, and be reminded about the social movement to occupy Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay Area. We encourage everyone to learn more about the social movements continuing to happen for Indigenous sovereignty.

If you are interested in finding community and or learning more about Indigeniety–please consider joining our campus in the following collective events:
